Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum
Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum is an iconic and potent white rum from Jamaica, boasting a high alcohol content of 63% ABV. It's the world's top-selling overproof white rum and holds a significant place in Jamaican culture, accounting for a large majority of the rum consumed on the island.
Established in 1825 when John Wray opened the Shakespeare Tavern in Kingston, the J. Wray and Nephew company has a rich history. His nephew, Charles James Ward, later joined the business and was instrumental in its growth and global recognition, even winning awards for their rums at international exhibitions in the late 19th century. In 1916, the company purchased the Appleton Estate, further solidifying their place in Jamaican rum production. Today, J. Wray and Nephew is part of the Campari Group.
Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum is known for its intense and fruity notes, often described with hints of banana, pineapple, and molasses, along with a spicy finish. It's a versatile spirit, essential in many classic rum cocktails like the Jamaican Rum Punch and often mixed with Ting (a grapefruit soda) to create the popular "Wray & Ting." It's also used in various cultural traditions in Jamaica, from celebrations to rituals. While potent, many appreciate its unique flavor profile, making it a staple in bars and homes both in Jamaica and across the world.
